Did Twitterati misunderstand Sumalatha's views on the Cauvery issue, or did the Karnataka MP really go back on her word? Here is what happened.

Mandya: Sumalatha, Mandya MP, in one of her speeches had said that the Cauvery water issue should be handled by the Karnataka government as the issue is with the Supreme Court. Prior to the recently-contested Lok Sabha election, Sumalatha, while campaigning, had promised to fight to get Cauvery water for Mandya in Karnataka.

"As it is in the court, we cannot approach it as MPs. Only the state government can fight it in court. Whatever support is needed in this, I am ready to give. Not only Mandya, but many districts surrounding Mandya are also affected by Cauvery water supply. All MPs from Mandya, Mysuru belt should unanimously tackle the issue," she had said in her speech.

Reacting to the speech, journalist DP Satish had put out a post: "Newly-elected Independent MP from Mandya and a film actress Sumalatha Ambareesh says, 'MPs can do nothing. Everything is in the hands of the state government. What can we do?' she asks."

Sumalatha soon became a victim of trolls. Twitter user Auto Raja said, "So Ignorance can Be Bliss for @sumalathaa? Or is it necessary to take up responsibilities of an elected MP? Every people representative needs to be accountable for their roles rather than expertise excuses. Hope the people of Mandya are not neglected after elections [sic]."

As these tweets went viral, Sumalatha took to her official handle and replied, "This is a typical fake and twisted representation of what I said. I had clearly said that nothing can be achieved without collective political will and cooperation between state/central govts. I am not a fool to utter this kind of a statement."

Meanwhile, JD(S) MLA and Karnataka transport minister DC Thammanna were also seen criticising people for voting Sumalatha to power, while defeating Nikhil (chief minister HD Kumaraswamy's son). To this too, Sumalatha reacted and said that she criticises this kind of politics.
