People from other religious community pelt stones at youth partaking in Durga idol procession; eight held

Due to loud music played during procession, people from other religious community objected and urged them to lower the volume. But, the people in the procession refused, which led to a quarrel in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur. A case has been registered at Pachperwa police station.

Balrampur: Tension prevailed on Tuesday (October 8) in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur after youths allegedly pelted stones at those partaking in a Durga procession. The idol being taken for immersion.

According to reports, the procession was passing through an area that was dominated by another community. Reports further stated that stone-pelting was a reaction for playing loud music by those in the procession.

Speaking to reporters, DIG of Devipatan Range, Rakesh Singh said, "When the procession was crossing the place at Harkadi village, some youths started pelting stones and bricks from the roof of the building."

Balrampur superintendent of police Dev Ranjan Verma said that as the music kept playing, people from another community objected to the loud music. 

The SP further said that while people from both sides were holding talks on this regard, youths from the area began to pelt stones at those in the procession.

During this mishap, four persons in the procession suffered injuries. The police officials later took eight persons into custody.

 "We arrested eight persons and lodged a case against 24 people in total. It was not a planned attack," the SP claimed.

"We identified the others after seeing videos of the incident filmed by locals. The police force was deployed in the area to maintain law and order," the SP added.
