Indian Railways on Monday accomplished the arch closure of the world's highest Railway bridge, Chenab Bridge, after the last 5.6-metre piece of closure segment was fitted at the highest point of the arch.

This achievement is a significant leap towards completing the 111 km long winding stretch from Katra to Banihal. The bridge is 1,315m long. The arch bridge will be 35 metres higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The bridge construction involved the fabrication of 28,660 metric tonnes of steel, 10 lakh cubic metres of earthwork and 66,000 cubic metres of concrete.

The bridge has been designed to withstand wind speed up to 266 Km/Hour and bear the highest intensity zone-V earthquake forces.

The Bridge will remain operational at a restricted speed of 30 Km/Hour even after removing one pier/trestle.
