Thrissur: Director General of Prisons Rishiraj re-inaugurated the first high-security prison in Kerala on Wednesday (July 4). This new high-security prison is situated at Viyyur in Kerala's Thrissur district.

The jail consists of 192 cells, which have the capacity to house 600 prisoners. The 55 hardcore criminals from the three central prisons in Kannur, Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram will be shifted to this high-security prison soon. The criminals include those who were booked by the national investigation agency in terror-related activities.

The three-storeyed building is situated in a nine-acre compound and even has an administrative block. A biometric fingerprint lock system is also installed in the prison for the entry and exit of the staff in prison. As part of the security arrangements, a body scanner is also installed in prison.

In 2016 this same prison was inaugurated by opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, but security arrangements were not provided in the prison at that time. The building was constructed at Rs 22 crore and security systems were later installed at Rs 11.51 crore.

The cells in the prison are built in such a way that the inmates will not see each other. The exciting part of the prion is that the inmates and visitors will be interacting through videoconferencing. All the prison rooms have toilets and CCTV cameras are also installed.

Days ago the Kerala Police, arrested two inmates of the women's prison and correctional home in Attukulangara, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala who had escaped on June 25. The convicts, Shilpa and Sandya, were arrested from Palode, Thiruvananthapuram when they were heading towards Shilpa's house.

After being brought to Fort Police Station to record their arrest, the duo was scheduled to be presented before the magistrate. Sources said the women escaped by scaling a prison wall.
