The farmer loan waive off scheme's amount which was deposited in more than 13,000 farmers' accounts has reportedly disappeared from their accounts
Yadgir (Karnataka): Farmers were overjoyed when the Karnataka government deposited money into their accounts as part of the state's farm loan waiver promise. However, the money has now disappeared from over 13,000 farmers’ bank accounts, all at once. As the farmers rushed to the banks to enquire, the bank authorities informed that the funds had been "refunded" to the state government.
Speaking to reporters, the farmers, alleged that the government's scheme was only to win votes of the people. Many other farmers claimed that the state government took back their money because they refused to vote for the Congress and JD(S).
In a meeting, organised by the state's Congress-JD(S) coalition government on Tuesday (June 11), chief minister HD Kumaraswamy once again accused the media of circulating false news on the farm loan waiver scheme and said that nationalised banks did the refunding and not the state government. He also blamed the Central government and questioned: "Why people are not questioning PM Narendra Modi as the nationalised banks come under Central government.”
Kumaraswamy further said that he has called a meeting with representatives of various banks on June 14 to discuss the issue.
Meanwhile, the banks have been asked to explain why the money has been refunded.
The state government had earlier announced that loans in commercial banks worth Rs 4,830 crore was waived for 7.49 lakh farmers till April 2019, and loans in cooperative banks worth Rs 3,488 crore were waived for 8.1 lakh farmers. But, the farmers now have a second thought of the state's coalition government.
