Guwahati: Five Rohingya girls, who were on their way to Assam, were arrested by the police on Wednesday.
The Rohingyas were apprehended at Churaibari along the Assam-Tripura border. The girls were being accompanied by a middleman, who was also arrested. According to the Assam Police, the girls came from Tripura and the middleman was helping them enter the state.
“During interrogation, the girls revealed that they hailed from Myanmar and had entered India through the Tripura-Bangladesh border without valid documents. The middleman had taken Rs 6,000 from each of them and promised to find a secure shelter in Assam's Karimganj district,” a top police official said.
The arrested girls have been identified as Jannat, Abiza, Saleha, Rabika and Rashida. The middleman has been identified as Shyamal Miya.
On January 21 this year, 30 Rohingyas, including 12 minors, were arrested by the police from a Guwahati-bound passenger bus in Karimganj.
On February 2 last year, seven Assam-bound Rohingya children were arrested by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) from a station in Tripura.
The Manipur Police had also arrested a couple, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, last year for their alleged involvement in the trafficking of Rohingyas from Myanmar.
Manipur police commandos, on April 8, 2018, had also arrested two Rohingyas who had entered the Northeastern state without valid documents via Moreh border.
Not only this, the Manipur Police had arrested three other Rohingyas on March 22, 2018 near Moreh in the state's Tengnoupal district along the Myanmar border.
