Former Kolkata top cop Rajeev Kumar avoids CBI investigation, requests for anticipatory bail

Kolkata: The former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar has not turned up to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Kolkata office on Monday. The “tainted” cop was supposed to join the investigation against him in Saradha chit fund scam. 

According to the sources, the CBI had summoned him to join investigation by 10 AM on Monday but he has not reached till now. 

Kumar has approached the Barasat court requesting him to give anticipatory bail. It is expected that he will reach office only after the decision of his bail plea has been made in the court.

Meanwhile, the CBI sources are claiming that he has not turned up even after multiple notices. They also said if Kumar continues to evade investigation, a non-bailable warrant will be issued against him. Also, he is likely to be arrested.

The CBI on Sunday has also issued a look-out notice against Kumar. The CBI also alerted airports so that Kumar cannot leave the country. 
The notice, which is valid till May 23, 2020, gives authorities at airports or land ports the power to hand over Kumar to the CBI is he tries to leave India.

On May 17, the Supreme court said that the CBI can arrest Kumar for failing to report to duty at the MHA. The apex court had allowed 7 days for Kumar to appeal.

Saradha chit fund scam

In order to investigate the Saradha scam, a special investigation team (SIT) was formed in 2013. This team was led by 1989 batch IPS officer, Kumar. However, the CBI claimed Kumar didn’t hand over crucial documents to it and also destroyed some of them related to the scam.
