Highlights

Abhinav Khare deep dives into the fifteenth chapter of the Bhagvad Geeta where Krishna says that those who are self-disciplined and on the path of yoga, realise that the Self is God

Krishna compares the realm of sorrow to a tree, the branches of which are the gunas and the roots are our actions. The leaves of the tree represent the sacred hymns. Krishna now asks Arjun to cut this tree with an axe, and that is the axe of detachment.

Once he has done that, he should search for God who is the primal person, which is indeed the essence of this universe. When Krishna is in his embodied form, he is not attached to any sensation but he enjoys it and lets it pass like the wind. Krishna also said that those who are self-disciplined and on the path of yoga, realise that the Self is God. Krishna then passes the Secret Knowledge to Arjun that the Ultimate Man as mentioned in all the scriptures is actually Krishna.

The supreme abode of Krishna cannot be illuminated by the sun, moon or the fire. If a person goes there, he does not return to the material world ever again.

Analysis

In this chapter, Krishna introduces us to the word Purusha, which means the Ultimate Person. The term Purusha has been mentioned in many Hindu texts including the Vedas. Purusha refers to as a Cosmic Person, which is a synonym for Krishna’s ultimate form. In our Hindu texts, the words Purusha, Brahma and Atma are often used interchangeably. Krishna then explains that these are but different names for him. According to Krishna, the soul of a person is just a fragment of him which is going to become the eternal soul in this world. Once the soul becomes embodied, it attracts the three gunas. When the nature and the body encompass the Self, the person becomes deluded and forgets that all of these things are just one and the same.
