Aligarh: A complaint was filed in the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) court in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for their provocative speeches over Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The complaint against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, were filed by advocate Pradeep Gupta. A similar complaint was filed against All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and journalist Ravish Kumar too.

The Uttar Pradesh court accepted the complaint, and the matter will now be heard on January 24.

The alleged speeches were delivered by the leaders on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which seeks to grant Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

What is the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill:

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill recently became a law after it was passed by the Indian Parliament. It provides citizenship for religiously persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, Jains and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan - three Islamic countries where Muslims are in the majority.

Who is protesting:

Misled by the Congress and other Opposition parties, the protests are by the Muslims and those from the North Eastern States. It has been made clear that these NE states are where the Inner Line Permit applies. The Muslims say that the Muslims from the three nations are excluded from the law. The wrong notion is that as a result of this law, the Muslims would be deported, which is however untrue.
