APJ Abdul Kalam’s birth anniversary: Remembering ‘Missile Man’ on World Students' Day

The United Nations Organisation (UNO) had declared the former President APJ Abdul Kalam’s birth anniversary as World Student Day. APJ Kalam was the 11th President of India and was a motivational figure to many. 

It is the birth anniversary of APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India and the UNO had declared it as World Student Day.  He was born on October 15,1931

Dr Kalam was one of the most inspirational leaders of India and was called the ‘Missile Man’ for his contributions in the field of science and technology. 
APJ Abdul Kalam was once asked about how he would like to be remembered, to which he replied that he would love to be remembered as a teacher first. 

Abdul Kalam’s contributions to the field of technology is being reaped by thousands of scientists and engineers, and millions of Indians even to this day.

Dr Kalam began his career with DRDO after graduating from Madras Institute of Technology. He later joined the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation as a scientist after becoming a member of the Defence Research and Development Service (DRDS).

In 1965, Dr Kalam independently started work on an expandable rocket project at the institution, and in 1969 he received the government’s approval and expanded the programme to include more engineers.

Dr Kalam was also the project director of India’s first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully deployed the Rohini satellite in near-earth orbit. Kalam has also played a contributory role in the development of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan for his contributions to ISRO and the DRDO. 

Dr Kalam passed away while addressing a gathering of students on July 27, 2015. His demise came as a shock to the nation.
