5 days after Surat tragedy, fire breaks out in Janakpuri girls' hostel (pictures)

New Delhi: A major fire was averted in Delhi when a girls' hostel caught fire on Wednesday early morning in Janakpuri. However, six girls have been injured in the accident.

Soon after the fire broke out, a call was made to the Delhi Fire Services following which firefighter rushed to the hostel. Forty-five girls and other administration staff were evacuated from all the floors.

The flames were doused by the firefighters in 45 minutes.

"A fire broke out at Kaveri Girls Hostel in Janakpuri area. A call was received at around 3 am from the hostel. In the incident, six girls have been injured. Around 45 girls were evacuated from the building," a DFS official said. 

According to the police, the fire may have started from an electric board panel in the basement of the hostel. The flames later spread to the ground floor.

Last week, 20 students in Surat died when a fire broke out in a coaching centre. 

Later, the local administration issued an immediate notice to about 152 coaching classes directly them to remain shut until they acquire NOC from the fire safety department. 

Following this incident, the Delhi government also issued a fire audit of all coachings and hostels to avert any incident.
