Every day, millions of people rely on trains as their primary mode of transportation, and a significant number of them are women. Ensuring their safety and security during travel is a top priority for the railway authorities. To address this, the Indian Railways has implemented several rules and measures aimed specifically at enhancing the safety of women passengers.

Section 139 of the Indian Railways Act, 1989, is designed to protect women travelling alone by ensuring immediate assistance in emergencies. It enables railway authorities to take swift action, providing security and support through officials, security personnel, and helpline services, making train travel safer for women.

Indian Railways has strict rules to ensure the safety and dignity of women passengers. A TTE cannot force a woman to deboard the train, even if she is found without a valid ticket. In such cases, the presence of a female police officer is mandatory to handle the situation appropriately.

Under Section 311 of the Indian Railways Act, army personnel are not permitted to enter or occupy women's compartments, ensuring a secure space for female passengers. Additionally, six seats are reserved for women in both the sleeper class and AC-3 tier coaches, providing them with safer and more comfortable travel options.
