Sub-Inspector Suman Kumari has earned her stripes as the first woman sniper of the Border Security Force (BSF), marking a significant milestone in the force's history. Completing an intensive eight-week sniper course at the Central School of Weapons and Tactics (CSWT) in Indore, Suman achieved the prestigious 'instructor grade' certification.
The announcement was made by BSF CSWT INDORE via social media, celebrating the force's commitment to inclusivity and female empowerment. Suman's journey to becoming a sniper began with her keen observation of the threat posed by sniper attacks from across the border while commanding a platoon in Punjab. Encouraged by her superiors, she volunteered for the challenging course, showcasing her determination and grit.
Despite being the sole female participant among 56 male counterparts, Suman's perseverance and dedication stood out, earning her the respect of her peers and instructors. According to CSWT IG Bhaskar Singh Rawat, the sniper course is renowned for its rigorous training regimen, comparable to commando training. Suman's successful completion of the course makes her eligible for deployment as a sniper instructor, inspiring future generations of female recruits to pursue similar military roles.
Speaking to The Times of India, Suman's instructors praised her exceptional performance, highlighting her physical and mental strength, as well as her willingness to learn and excel in challenging situations. Hailing from Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, Suman hails from a humble background, with her father employed as an electrician and her mother a homemaker. Joining BSF in 2021, she has proven herself capable in unarmed combat as well.
Suman Kumari's achievement not only reflects her personal dedication and resilience but also represents a significant step forward in promoting gender diversity and equality within the BSF.
