In 2018, India witnessed its own #MeToo movement which created a buzz in B-town. The movement was initiated by actor Tanushree Dutta when she accused veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexually harassing her on the sets of their 2008 film Horn Ok Pleassss. After her accusations, Nana Patekar stepped down from Housefull 4 and lodged a complaint against Dutta. In this storm, many other big names from the Bollywood and other industries cropped up such as Sajid Khan, M J Akbar, Alok Nath, Vikas Behl and Anu Malik as well among others.

The magnum opus of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Padmaavat, which was earlier known as Padmavati courted many controversies. Right from Deepika’s Ghoomar song as Rani Padmavati to her performing Jauhar in the movie, everything was heavily criticised by various Rajput groups. Karni Sena protested against the film, burning the dummies of Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. In fact, BJP leader Suraj Pal Amu went on to say that he will give Rs 10 crore to the person who will behead Deepika.

Disha Patani made headlines for posting a bold picture of herself on the occasion of Diwali. In the picture, she was seen holding a diya and wearing a gorgeous designer lehenga but had replaced blouse with a sports bra by Calvin Klein. Ripu Daman Jaiswal accused makers of the Akshay Kumar starrer of stealing scenes from a script he had written. He also filed an FIR against Akshay Kumar and alleged that he had sent a script to Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. He claimed that almost 11 scenes have been copied from his script and that he would definitely go to court. However, the film’s director R. Balki denied all such claims in an interview.

Sara Khan and Rakhi Sawant had commented on women wearing ‘burqa’ and that had led to controversy. Now both have apologised for their comments and said they have no right to hurt the feelings of a community. Sara had said that trolls should not just propagate wearing 'burqa', but instead have 'parda' on their eyes. Rakhi had said that she would make all men wear ‘burqa’.

Thalapathy Vijay’s Sarkar was one of the biggest hits in Tamil cinema this year. However, the film had its share of controversies. The government of Tamil Nadu urged the makers to chop out a few scenes from the movie after finding them objectionable. A non-bailable arrest warrant was also issued against director AR Murugadoss for the scenes in Sarkar, which were later dropped after a court hearing.
