Bengali actress Payel Chakraborty was found hanging in a Siliguri hotel in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district. The initial investigation suggests that the actress has committed suicide.
Actress Payel Chakraborty, who has been a part of Bengali TV and film industry, was found hanging from a ceiling fan of her room in a hotel in Siliguri, West Bengal. The actress' body was recovered at around 5 pm on Wednesday, a police officer said.
The 35-year-old actress was a resident of Jadavpur, Kolkata. She has acted in many TV serials and web series such as Ek Masher Sahitya, Goenda Ginni and Chokher Tara Tui.
“Chakraborty was found hanging from the ceiling of her hotel room on Wednesday. She had checked into the hotel a day earlier. Prima facie it looks like a case of suicide. However, we haven’t found any note. We will investigate the case from all angles,” said a police officer.
As per reports, a hotel staff named Arun Deb informed the police after there was no response from her room even after repeated knocks on her door. In his statement given to the police, he also said, Payel had told the staff members on Tuesday that she would be leaving for Gangtok the next day.
Arun Deb said, “Chakraborty, after checking in, had categorically told the hotel officials that she did not want to be disturbed in her room. She had locked the room from inside and did not order dinner." He also added that the following morning when there was no response from her despite repeated knocks on the door, the hotel contacted the police.
According to reports published in various news websites, Chakraborty got divorced recently and had a two-year-old son. Police also suspect that she was suffering from depression.
A police officer said, “Her family members have told us that she was suffering from depression. They, however, don’t have any clue why she was in Siliguri as Chakraborty had told them that she was going to Ranchi for a shoot. We are trying to find why she didn’t reveal her actual location."
Payal's parents who live in Kolkata have already been contacted. According to the police, preliminary investigation suggests the actress committed suicide.
