Leeds: India wicketkeeper-batsman and former captain MS Dhoni turned 38 today (July 7) and wishes poured in for him on social media as fans started trending #HappyBirthdayDhoni on the micro-blogging site Twitter.

On the eve of Dhoni’s birthday, India defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets at Headingley in Leeds to wrap up the league phase of the ICC World Cup 2019. He took three catches and effected one stumping in the match. The win put India on top of the points table and now they face New Zealand in the semi-finals on Tuesday (July 9).

One of the greatest captains of India, Dhoni is much-loved by his millions of fans, in India and across the globe. He is still an important part of the Virat Kohli-led side even though there has been much criticism over his batting in recent times.

He made his international debut in an ODI against Bangladesh in December 2004. His Test debut was in December 2005 and played his first T20I in December 2006. He led India to World T20 title in South Africa in 2007.

The career-defining moment for Dhoni was taking India to 2011 World Cup glory at home. His six to seal the final at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on April 2, 2011 is forever etched in the memories of every Indian cricket fan.

Former cricketers Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Aakash Chopra, Mohammad Kaif and others wished Dhoni on his birthday, on Twitter.

After India beat Sri Lanka, vice-captain Rohit Sharma was asked about Dhoni’s birthday and he had this to say, “Yeah, it's his birthday, so we will celebrate his birthday. What else?”

“What can I say? What do you say on a birthday? Happy Birthday. That is what you say, right? Yeah, no, tomorrow is our travel day. We don't whether we are going to Manchester or Birmingham, we will probably cut a cake on the bus. We will send you the photos,” he added.
