As expected Buttler seemed furious and had a heated exchange with Ashwin before leaving the field. The dismissal created a big controversy going into the 12th edition of the IPL. Rajasthan were 108/1 in 12.4 overs at that stage. The home team eventually lost the match by 14 runs as they were restricted to 170/9 in 20 overs

Jaipur: Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Jos Buttler on Monday became the first victim of 'Mankading' in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) when a desperate Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) skipper Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the batsman in the controversial manner during their match in Jaipur.

With Buttler going strong at 69 off 43 balls while chasing 185 runs, Ashwin mankaded the RR opener without giving him any warning.

As per the laws of the game, the third umpire declared Buttler out but such a dismissal had always raised eyebrows as it is considered against the spirit of the game.

As expected Buttler seemed furious and had a heated exchange with Ashwin before leaving the field.

The dismissal created a big controversy going into the 12th edition of the IPL.

Rajasthan were 108/1 in 12.4 overs at that stage. The home team eventually lost the match by 14 runs as they were restricted to 170/9 in 20 overs.

Among Indians, it was Kapil Dev who had mankaded Peter Kirsten of South Africa during the 1992-93 series and in Indian domestic cricket Railways' spinner Murali Karthik had mankaded Sandipan Das of Bengal during a Ranji Trophy match.

Later, Ashwin defended his move saying that it was within the rules of the game. "On my part, it was very instinctive. It wasn’t planned or anything like that. It’s there within the rules of the game. I don’t understand where the spirit of the game comes (in). Naturally, if it’s there in the rules it’s there," Ashwin, the KXIP captain, said after the match.

Cricket world was divided over the dismissal and here are some of the reactions from Twitter

Sorry - one more thing to add. If Ben Stokes did what Ashwin did to it would be ok ? I’m just very disappointed in Ashwin as I thought he had integrity & class. Kings lost a lot of supporters tonight. Especially young boys and girls ! I do hope the BCCI does something

So disappointed in as a Captain & as a person. All captains sign the wall & agree to play in the spirit of the game. RA had no intention of delivering the ball - so it should have been called a dead ball. Over to u BCCI - this a not a good look for the

— Shane Warne (@ShaneWarne)

Law 41.16 a batsmen at non strikers end should not leave his ground UNTIL the bowler has released the ball!

SO OUT! Lesson.. batsmen watch the bowlers release the ball!

— Dean Jones (@ProfDeano)

Regardless deano that’s just not right!

— Sam Billings (@sambillings)

I can’t believe what I’m seeing!! Terrible example to set for young kids coming through. In time I think Ashwin will regret that.

— Eoin Morgan (@Eoin16)

What an absolute disgrace! spitting tacs and rightfully so!!!

— Mitchell McClenaghan (@Mitch_Savage)

He ain’t winning any spirit of cricket awards is old ashwin

— Dale Steyn (@DaleSteyn62)

How’s playing within the laws of the game ‘unfair’??

— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash)

I would say to all India ex players/Pundits who are supportive of what R Ashwin did ... If was Batting would you be so supportive !!???

— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan)

I support every bowler who does it.Whether that bowler is English or from the Arctic, since every1 is justifying the non striker, might as well they stand at the half way mark of the pitch before the ball is released, can't ratify wrong just coz batsmen hav been doing it 4 too long https://t.co/uZC6DjuYMO

— Kartik Murali (@kartikmurali)

The batsmen was warned! Jos wasn’t warned! Get your facts right!

— Kevin Pietersen🦏 (@KP24)

My thoughts on the Mankad. Its not cheating, it’s not against the spirit as it’s in the rules you can do it. Personally I would warn someone if I was to do it but the batsman should also play fair by staying behind the crease. It’s a bit like the underarm serve in tennis right??

Butler still in the crease even after Ashwin stopped in his stride and started turning back to Mankade him. He literally waited till he went out of the crease. Made a mockery. pic.twitter.com/QfpcJtCkXF
