Perambalur: Just months after reports of the Pollachi sexual assault case rocked Tamil Nadu, yet another case in Perambalur on similar lines has come to the fore in the state.

About 20 housewives and college girls were allegedly sexually assaulted and harassed by a gang in Perambalur.

Just like the Pollachi case, this gang too recorded the assault and used it to blackmail the women.

The case bears an uncanny resemblance to the Pollachi sexual assault case where scores of women were sexually exploited and threatened.

The Perambalur All Women Police registered a case upon receiving a complaint from Advocate P Arul.

Arul met the Perambalur superintendent of police (SP) Disha Mittal to file a complaint. He alleged that the gang lured the women and then sexually assaulted them, apart from taking videos of the act.

He further alleged that they would then use the videos to threaten the women to part with money or threaten to make the videos public.

The affected women allegedly desisted from lodging a complaint out of fear of repercussions and Arul urged the Perambalur district police to investigate and initiate action against those involved in the crimes.

Cases under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty, 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) and section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2008, have been registered.

The complaint cited that “an important person in the ruling party at Perambalur, a fake journalist and few others” are accused in the case. However, the complaint did not name the persons involved.

A senior police officer has assured that the Perambalur Police have taken cognisance of the complaint and are looking for evidence
