Bengaluru: Congress MLA BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan has announced that, once the situation returns to normal, he will reach out to Bengaluru violence victims’ families and give them Rs 5 lakh each in cash as compensation from his side. After taking part in burial and prayers for the three deceased who were sole breadwinners for their respective families, Khan blamed police. He said if police had registered a complaint against the person who posted derogatory remarks and not delayed it for three hours, riots could have been averted.

He said, “No one came from outside, it is total police failure. Due to police’s failure, such a big incident happened. When the public first approached police to file a complaint following remarks on Prophet Muhamad, had they filed a case and been arrested, this problem would not have taken place. They made the public wait for three hours and this is the reason the incident (violence) happened.”

On the issue of the police arresting SDPI leaders and others alleging it is they who instigated, this is what he had to say:

“This is false, some say SDPI did it, others did it, this is just an eye wash. I was on the spot from 9:30 pm Tuesday (August 11) till 3:30 am on Wednesday. The leaders from SDPI were also with me and they also wanted peace. I can't tell they (BJP government) are trying to divert issues but all I can say is police’s failure.”

This is surely not the first time that Zameer Ahmed has thrown his weight behind such people.

A few months ago, Padarayanapura in Bengaluru, Karnataka had hit the national headlines as many residents of the area had attacked corona warriors and policemen alike when they went there to get them quarantined.

As the accused returned to the area, they were given a rousing welcome by none other than Zameer Ahmed, sitting Congress MLA from the area.

There were also news reports that he paid up sureties of all the accused amounting to Rs 1 crore 26 lakh as the court granted them bail.
