The US President Donald Trump ordered an airstrike at Baghdad International Airport that killed Qasem Soleimani, a key Iranian military commander, in a "decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad" that was intended to deter "future Iranian attack plans," the Pentagon confirmed on Thursday.

The US and Saudi Arabia have blamed Iran for providing artillery to Yemen's Houthi rebels who had claimed responsibility for the drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities that hit nearly 50% of the kingdom's global crude oil supply, despite repeated denial by Tehran.

Saudi energy minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said that the country had dipped into its strategic reserves to maintain supply. Having already restored half of its oil output, the minister said that production would return to normal by the end of September
