Tiruvannamalai tense after WhatsApp video targets Vanniyars; security tightened

Tirunelveli: A youth recorded a video on WhatsApp and sent it across to various groups, slamming the Vanniyar community. This has led to tension in Tiruvannamalai district as people from the Vanniyar community are staging violent protests. On April 3, Vanniyars had reportedly attacked the houses of Dalits in Ariyalur district. Following this incident, the youth is seen abusing the Vanniyar community. At least 500 people from the community are staging protest demanding the arrest of the boy who recorded the video. On Friday, Ponnamaravathi was tense as violent protests broke out after an audio clip of a conversation between two men from dominant castes speaking cheaply of women from another caste was leaked. Currently, tight police security has been deployed in Tiruvannamalai to keep the law and order situation under control.
