Ranchi Test: Umesh Yadav smashes 5 sixes, sets new record against South Africa

Ranchi: After Rohit Sharma’s record double century, Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav too entered the record books, not for his bowling, but for batting, during the second day of the third Test against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday (October 21).

The 31-year-old Umesh matched Sachin Tendulkar’s feat in Test history. Umesh is only the second Indian after Tendulkar to hit two sixes off his first two balls in a Test. Playing in his 43rd Test match, Umesh also registered his highest score (31) in the format.

The right-hander began his innings with two maximum hits off left-arm spinner George Linde in the 112th over of the Indian innings in the second session of play. He again hit the same bowler for three sixes in one over before getting dismissed in the same over (114th of the innings).

Umesh’s 10-ball 31 with five sixes is the fastest 30-plus score in the five-day format. He eclipsed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming’s mark (31 not out off 11). Umesh’s strike rate of 310.00 is the best in Test history for a 10-plus ball innings.
