Kerala gold smuggling case suspects Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair were arrested while they were planning to move to Nagaland.

Accused persons -- Prakash Thampi and Vishnu Somasundaram -- in the gold smuggling case were arrested days after violinist Balabhaskar's death. The crime branch said there were no links between the two cases while adding that they are investigating whether anybody had misused Balabhaskar's assets. 

Balabhaskar and his family met with an accident at Pallipuram near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in the early hours of September 25. While Balabhaskar and his wife, Lakshmi were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, their 2-year-old daughter, Tejasvini, unfortunately, died on the spot. Balabhaskar died in hospital on October 2.

 

The DRI had found that Vishnu coordinated and led the team accused of smuggling gold. The DRI will also probe if Vishnu used Balabhaskar’s international tours as a means to smuggle gold into the country.
 

 The case of Balabhaskhar’s death grew murkier after Prakashan Thampy, one of his former programme coordinators, was arrested in a gold smuggling case.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Tuesday (May 28) arrested a woman who arrived in Hyderabad from Dubai for smuggling 11.1 kg gold and Rs 1.5 crore worth foreign currencies at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

According to the officials, they intercepted a woman who had come to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

The accused hails from Punjab's Mansa district and has been arrested under relevant sections of the Customs Act, the official said, adding further investigation is underway.

To deceive security agencies, gold smugglers are getting more creative by the day. From hiding gold inside the lining of suitcases to concealing precious metal as used automobile spare parts, smugglers are using innovative modus-operandi to bring gold into India illegally.
