It's now four years since MK Alagiri, son of late DMK chief Karunanidhi, was expelled from the party. The disqualified leader is now aiming to make his political comeback triggering mild tremors in DMK post the death of his father. "Yes, Kalaignar expelled me in 2014. After his death, I want to get back into the party and after having expressed my anguish at the memorial in Marina beach, I have begun my journey," said Alagiri, after holding a marathon meeting in Madurai with his supporters.

"I have the support of over 1 lakh members of the DMK. And I am 200% confident of this," said Alagiri, all set to launch a rally on September 5. Is this a show of strength? "All those who owe their allegiance to my father, are with me. And this rally is held to pay homage to Kalaignar," he said.

Sources close to MK Stalin, working president of DMK, said Alagiri is no threat, and that all MLAs are with Thalapathy (as Stalin is fondly known as). On August 28, DMK is slated to hold a meeting declaring Stalin as the chief of the party. "I don't care. He is the non-working president of the party," said Alagiri, "Apart from ripping his shirt open and walking out of the secretariat, he has done nothing. Isn't that embarrassing enough?" Alagiri criticised Stalin further claiming that it was a shame to let AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran win with a cooker symbol during the famous RK Nagar election in Chennai in 2017. "It's remarkable how Dhinakaran won single-handedly without AIADMK's support. DMK's own members did not vote for the party candidate, who secured around 24000 votes."

Alagiri was the southern baron for the DMK in 2009, having earned the name Anja Nenjam, meaning brave heart. And Madurai, the political capital of Tamil Nadu, has always been his stronghold. He was MP when he was barred from the party. "I ensured DMK made inroads into Madurai, Nagercoil, etc. I never asked for a position then. And I will not even now. My father has always taught me to live with self respect," he said, "In fact, after I moved out of the party, DMK stood 4th in Nagercoil in 2014 general election." If Stalin or the DMK refuse to consider Alagiri's return, "I will chalk out my plan post the rally," he said. Another new party in the offing? Alagiri refused to confirm, but neither did he deny. "We will decide," he said.

Speculation is that many disgruntled leaders of the DMK are with actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth. "Yes, I have heard that. It could be so," said Alagiri, who shares a great rapport with the superstar. "I have known Rajinikanth for very long. He has always had great regard and respect for my father," he said. Many parties reportedly are trying to woo the Kaala actor to steer the masses in the State. Alagiri dismissed it when asked if he will be one of them too. "Neither he or I have launched a party formally yet. He is a good friend," said Alagiri.

In four days, Stalin, will officially take over the reins of DMK. But will this son rise and steer as the lone monarch fighting the brave heart?
