Bengaluru: With blood on its hands for the deadly Sikh pogrom, or familiarly known as the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, the Congress party, headed by Sonia Gandhi, met Indian President Ram Nath Kovind earlier today (Feb 27) to register her protest against the loss of lives and property in the Delhi riots.

She submitted a memorandum to the President thus: "We call upon you (President) to ensure that life, liberty, & property of citizens are preserved. We also reiterate that you should immediately call for the removal of the home minister for his inability to contain violence."

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too accompanied the AICC chief.

No doubt the Delhi violence is reprehensible. It is sad and disheartening that more than 30 lives were lost and more than a hundred people have been injured.  Delhi has an eerie calm. But the fear is real. The government must work sincerely to restore peace and harmony.

What’s more laughable and perhaps even appalling is the way Congress is playing politics over the riots.

On Wednesday, Sonia Gandhi held a presser and held the BJP responsible for the riots and even sought the resignation of the Union home minister, at a time when she should have been offering a healing touch.

On its part, the government has commissioned NSA Ajit Doval to oversee tranquillity measures and things are slowly limping back to normalcy.

The anti-Sikh riots are a blot on India’s secular fabric. Presently an SIT formed by the Supreme Court is investigating the case.

The riots have also been touted to be the cause for the calling of a separate homeland for Sikhs, often referred to as Khalistan.

Another shocking reaction to the pogrom was how former PM and Indira Gandhi’s son Rajiv Gandhi had said, “When a big tree falls, the earth shakes.”

On our part, we wish such riots don’t recur and the guilty are punished.
