After MyNation broke the story of the customs allegedly seizing 2 kg of gold from the wife of TMC MP from Diamond Harbour Abhishek Banerjee, who is West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, at the Kolkata airport, the Election Commission has sought a full report on the incident.

While Rujira Banerjee, who was being accompanied by one Menka Gambhir, allegedly refused to get her baggage checked by the customs officials, even abused and threatened them, the local police are accused of having pressurised the airport officials to release her without frisking.  

Agencies reported that additional chief electoral officer Sanjay Basu had told media persons on Monday in Kolkata that a “factual report” had been sought from the district election officer of the 24 North Parganas.

“We have sought a factual report from the district election officer of North 24 Parganas on the matter. We are looking at the social media angle as well,” Basu had told reporters.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the BJP pressed noted public figure Swapan Dasgupta into action. Dasgupta raised five questions to be answered by Abhishek Banerjee.
